Project Description
Located near Franke Park’s Pavilion #2 and Long House, a planned renovation to the 2-5-year-old playground equipment and play experience awaits residents and visitors. This planned renovation follows the replacement of equipment in the 5-12-year-old area in 2022. This playground is one of the largest in the park system, and is near the Franke Day Camp and Children’s Zoo.
A message from MidStates Recreation, the playground equipment's provider:
“Our playground design for Franke Park focuses on adding play value for the 2-5 age range within the existing footprint. We have provided opportunities for balance, coordination, and motor skill development by utilizing three varieties of balance steppers, functionally linked together to form a “course”. Additionally, two freestanding spring riders, the Silly Tree play piece, and slides connected to the structure all contribute to development of core strength and balance skills. Sensory stimulation is accomplished by use of nature sound play panels, musical elements, a functioning telescope mounted on the structure, and a textured, bumpy, two user slide coming off the structure at 60” high. Our use of two-user slides contributes to social interaction opportunities by allowing kids to play in parallel with one another. Two spring riders placed next to each other, the Cozy Cocoon spinner, and Silly tree also provide social play opportunities. A themed gorilla log crawl offers imaginative play while creating a cozy space. 4 bays of swings ensure options for all abilities – two toddler seats, four traditional seats, and two ADA seats. The overall look compliments the existing 5-12 play area in the park while also featuring an animal theme to pay tribute to the zoo.”
The new inclusive equipment is tailored to support the physical, social, and emotional development of children ages 5-12 and is accessible for all abilities, ensuring every child can play and learn. Ample seating is available for parents and caregivers to supervise play.
