Project Description

The final phase of the 4.5-mile-long Hanna Street Trail will connect Downtown Fort Wayne to Tillman Park, and Southtown Center is anticipated to start construction in 2025. This eight-foot-wide concrete trail will be constructed on the east side of Hanna Street, from Wallace to Berry, for a total length of 0.74 miles.

The traol project will include the following:

  • Pedestrian signal upgrades at intersections with traffic signals
    • Hanna Street and Lewis Street
    • Hanna Street and Jefferson Boulevard
    • Hanna Street and Washington Boulevard
  • ADA improvements at all intersections
  • New pedestrian-level street lights between Wallace and Berry

The trail will connect users to the Berry Street sidewalk and bicycle lane, allowing trail users to access several downtown locations as well as the Rivergreenway. Once complete, this section will allow East Central residents to connect to many of the 107 miles of trail network across Fort Wayne. Over 41,000 residents live within a half mile of the Hanna Street Trail. Additionally, there are 20 schools and 19 parks within a half mile, making this project important for increased connectivity and pedestrian safety.

The City opened a total of four bids on June 26, 2025, and Hipskind Concrete was the lowest bidder. With Council approval in July, construction could begin as soon as August 2025. Completion date for the project is May 15, 2026.
