Project Description

This project will renovate the ever-aging railroad underpasses at South Calhoun Street, South Harrison Street, and Fairfield Avenue, just south of downtown. These are in the Hoagland Masterson Neighborhood, LaRez Neighborhood, Poplar Neighborhood, and West Central Neighborhoods.

The Railroad Underpass Renovations will update the lighting to make walking and traversing the currently darker elevations safer for pedestrians and motorists. In addition, the project will also include murals on the walls to encompass the neighborhoods or downtown areas they are leading to. Finally, tree and brush removal at the underpasses' entrances will also occur.

This project will give much-needed vibrancy to the gateways of the city located at the southern edge of downtown.

Calhoun St

The work for this underpass has been completed! This underpass is between Murray Street & Baker Street.

Lighting Improvements: Doubling the amount of lighting for traffic safety as well as linear lights for pedestrian safety on the sidewalk.

Painting Information: Power Washing of the existing concrete will be done as well as removal of overgrown brush. A primer will be applied around the bridge on all concrete surfaces. The Railroad will not allow it on the steel. Then a coat of paint will be applied to give a clean organized look. Finally, an artist “mural” will be applied on both faces of Calhoun Street to represent the corridor for a friendly invite.
