Program Description
This program seeks to reduce trip hazards in neighborhoods throughout the City. The Right of Way Department employs a contractor to grind lifts between 1/4" - 2" in the sidewalk down to improve walkability. The cost to grind down a heaved joint is significantly less expensive and less time consuming than replacing two panels of sidewalk. Because of this, many neighborhoods have benefitted from this program. Since its inception in 2014, the Public Works has improved over 750,000 feet of sidewalk (~145 miles) by grinding sidewalk trip hazards!
Grinding takes place in all 6 districts, ensuring that the entire City of Fort Wayne may benefit. Below is a map of the neighborhoods selected for this year's program. If your neighborhood is interested in being added to the list for 2026, please reach out to the Right of Way Department.
